Big Maths (English)

Big Maths Online website. Already, members of Year 1 to 6 classes are used to doing Big Maths tests every Friday. There are three different tests: CLIC (pure numeracy skills), SAFE (Shape, Amounts, Fractions and Explaining) and Beat That (mental maths).

Once a week, all pupils will be required to complete their tests online.

Step 1

Google - Big Maths online

Step 2

School Pin: 1279

Step 3

Username: email HWB (without the @hwbcymru.net)

Step 4

Password: same as their HWB password

Step 5

Choose the test you want to do 1st and off you go. (The Welsh SAFE and CLIC tests are available at the bottom of the page if you feel confident to do so through the medium of Welsh.)

Step 6

IMPORTANT! Your child will need paper and pencil so they can calculate and check before putting the answers in the boxes.

CLIC and SAFE Tests (1-5)

If you see these messages on the "Your teacher will help you with this challenge" screen, it means that your child is working on tests 1 to 5 THESE ARE COMPLETE WITH AN ADULT ON PAPER - NOT ON THE BIG MATHS ONLINE WEBSITE.

CLIC

On the school website, there are copies of tests 1-5 along with a script that you can use to carry out the test with your child. As with 6+ tests, you can read the script, but try not to help with the maths during the test.

SAFE

THERE ISN’T A QUESTION/ ANSWER SHEET FOR THE STAGE. INSTEAD, ASK THE QUESTIONS IN THE SCRIPT DURING PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES.

Please encourage your child to try their best. I would very much like you as parents not to help, apart from reading the questions. As your child does the tests, you can sit with them and make notes of what is difficult for them and practice these skills further.

Weekly Email

By Monday afternoon, your child will have received an email containing the results of the CLIC test. It will look like this:

Parent Support Packs

In the email you will see your child's CLIC level (from 1 to 20). In this example, the child is on CLIC 11 so this is the Support Pack you need to use. The Support Packs are below.

The numbers above match the questions in the CLIC test. So, if 4 is red, go on to practice question 4 from the exercise pack.

If they are all green, your child is ready to begin the next level.

• Once you have selected the package it is easy. Each pack is made up of 10 sections, one for each question

• With each of the questions:

• Explanation of the method

• Repeat learning sheet

• Questions to use the method in context.
